At the diesel-electric hybrid’s core is the power control unit which continuously communicates with the engine control unit to monitor road conditions against driving for the best blend of fuel economy and performance. A green light in the dashboard indicates to the driver when he is at optimum ECO driving.
Like with smaller hybrid vehicles, braking deceleration energy is converted into electricity and stored in the battery of a hybrid diesel-electric commercial truck. As the truck clutch disengages, the truck’s system automatically enables energy recovery and regeneration. Additionally, the engine shuts off when the vehicle stops to conserve fuel. Simply taking a foot off the brake pedal starts the engine again to continue the “green” journey.

Since an engine is most efficient at cruising speeds, a feature called motor assist regulates and directs the hybrid to switch to engine-only mode while cruising.
